Song of Solomon 3:7-8

Now, if you would, we have the Lord’s Supper today. So I ask you to turn with me in the book of Solomon once again. Song of Solomon, Chapter 3, I want to read verses 7 and 8. I’ll pick up, you know what? I’ll pick up with verse 6 and we’ll read through 8. Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillows of smoke? perfume with myrrh and frankincense with all powders of the merchant. Behold his bed, which is Solomon’s. Three score valiant men are about it of the valiant of Israel. They all hold swords being expert in war. Every man hath this sword upon his thigh, cause of fear. in the night. And God bless to us to this word this morning. Now the bride has been highly praised by the daughters of Jerusalem, which we said were young professing Christians in verse 6. We talked about the bride coming out of the wilderness as we come out of the world. The bride, you know, these puffs of smokes going up are the prayers of the saints going up to the Lord God. and the perfuming, of course, are the fruits of graces that are given to us. However, the bride, who has been commended, is concerned to focus your attention not on her, but on the Savior, Jesus Christ. Anything commend her but when her has been given to her by the Savior. Behold, there is a far more exquisite and excellent purpose. person to be praised than me. And they should focus on the glory of the Lord rather than on my poor perfections. We see here the bride’s king is Solomon. Now the song of Solomon is a very highly figurative book. It’s an allegory. It depicts Christ and his bride, the church, similar to Ephesians 5. So this is not to be a very highly figurative book. literally understood of Solomon, the son of David, the king of Israel. But a greater than Solomon is here, as Jesus declared of himself. Solomon was undoubtedly an eminent type of Christ. Solomon prefigured the coming Messiah in many ways, and here are some of them. Solomon had a vast kingdom from the river Euphrates to the sea, the Mediterranean. And so will our Lord. Christ’s kingdom is worldwide, was citizens from every nation under heaven. Solomon was a rich and powerful king, but Christ supersedes him, where you read of the unsearchable riches of Christ in Ephesians 3.8, and is possessing of all power in heaven and earth in Matthew 2818. Solomon was a magnificent king, whose wisdom was sought from people all over the earth. And our Lord Jesus Christ, though, as well as all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, according to Colossians 2.3. Solomon had a peaceable reign. His government was blessed. His people were happy. Jesus Christ’s title is the prince of peace. His kingdom consists of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. And his subject. are called the sons of peace. So Christ is the believer’s king, who is prefigured in many ways by Solomon. This is the bride’s king. Now the bride’s conveyance here is spoken of as a bed. The word for bed here means a portable, enclosed chair, carried by poles on the shoulders of men. we see that in verses 8 through 10 here such royal chairs were covered with beautiful curtains and used to convey kings and their wives and their friends from one place to another often they were used to convey the bride from to the bride to the house of the bridegroom and so it is spiritual what is portrayed here is Christ the king conveying his bride through this life on the way to the promised land of heaven. This picture is the close spiritual fellowship you enjoy with the Lord Jesus Christ as you travel through this life. It speaks of the access, the nearness, the closeness, the friendship you enjoy with the Savior. It’s a delightful picture. So as the bride’s conveys. and then the bride’s security is mentioned about the guards here. Three score, 60, confident, they should amount to protect you. These are valiant men. They are courageous men. They are brave men. Like David’s mighty men. They’re fearless. They’re of the valiant of Israel. They are about it, about the bed. They provide all-round protection. Because it’s attacked from any side. They all hold swords where they’re well-armed, strike down the enemy, regardless of which direction they’re attacking. They’re expert in war. They’re skillful. They’re experienced. They’re battle-tested veterans. Every man of this sword upon his side, they’re prepared. They’re ready to act at any time. So we see the quality of the guards. We see the identity of the guards. The holy angels are our guards against all enemy threats. Here’s what we read in Psalm 91.11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all my ways. The angels of God are commanded by God himself to see to it that his elect people are kept secure as they go on toward heaven. In all thy ways, the angelic protection promised is exceedingly broad. Wherever life, takes you, God’s angels are watching over you to keep you protected. Psalm 347, the angel the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him and deliver. On every side, the watch is kept by these holy warriors with sleepless eyes. This unseen guard delivers you safely from many dangers. The holy angels often. portrayed with a sword in their hand in scriptures. For example, when Elisha was at Dothan in 2nd, King 6, the city was surrounded by the Syrian army to capture the prophet, and his servants seeing this vast enemy army, was afraid, and he tells the prophet of the Lord, and Elisha praises, as Lord, I pray that He open his eyes that he may see. and the Lord opened the eyes of the young man and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire rounded by Elisha. He was protected by the angels of God. That’s the identity of the guards. And the special reason for the guard? Because of fear in the night. Now, this does not mean that Christ was afraid. It’s not for his sake. Why he is a blind of the tribe of Judah. He’s not a friend. But it is for the believers that we have this protection mentioned. By night means during any time of darkness, any trial, any difficult time that we have in this life. Paul spoke of a period in his life when, without our fighting, and so within our fears, he said. The hostility he faced was beyond major. so that he despaired even of his life. At times, we may fear of ever getting to heaven, or of holding out against persecution or severe trial. When such fears and doubts arise, we need to be reminded that God has a guard about us to protect us. Christ, with alleviate your fears and comfort your heart as he promised to deliver you safely to heaven. Let me close by saying this. Your eyes should always look beyond man to the Lord himself. Behold. This is a real source of comfort. Christ would have you enjoy the comforts and joy of his presence as you are conveyed through this life to your heavenly home. Thirdly, when under dark circumstances, dark times, when you are troubled and fearful, remember, you are under the special guard and care of the holy angels and will be kept safe and for your salvation secure. So let us take comfort from this passage of scripture this morning. May the Lord bless us as his people.
